Frequently asked questions

Everything you might want to know before you chip in.

What do donations actually pay for?+

Hosting and database bills, our verification team's field visits, moderation tools that keep scam listings out, and the free tier for small businesses and landlords who can't afford paid features.

Is my payment secure?+

Yes. All payments are processed by Paystack, a PCI-DSS Level 1 certified provider. We never see or store your card details.

How does the M-Pesa flow work?+

After you click 'Continue to secure payment', Paystack opens and lets you choose M-Pesa. Enter your Safaricom number and you'll get an STK push prompt on your phone. Enter your M-Pesa PIN to complete — you'll be redirected back with a receipt.

Do I get a receipt?+

Yes. A branded PDF receipt is emailed automatically the moment your payment is confirmed. Keep it for your records.

Can I stay anonymous?+

Absolutely. Uncheck 'List my name on the Donors wall' before you pay and your donation won't be shown publicly.

Is Utawala Directory a registered charity?+

No — we're an independent community project, not a registered non-profit. Donations are voluntary contributions, not tax-deductible.
